On November 24 2017, two of our staff attended a regional consultative meeting, East Africa, by She Forum Africa held at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Nairobi. Intended for development partners and non-governmental organisations, the consultative meeting sought to set the agenda for another bigger event slated for a later date. The theme of the meeting was ‘Safe spaces for women and girls in Africa’.
From the meeting, there was consensus that safe spaces for women and girls across Africa were shrinking at an alarming rate. For instance, hitherto safe spaces for these vulnerable groups such as the home and school were no longer safe; with increased documented cases of sexual and gender based violence perpetrated on women and girls on these two fronts.
Further, there was cognisance that no single organisation could manage to do it all in tackling sexual and gender based violence. On the contrary, there was need for the various organisations to complement each other’s efforts. For instance, an organisation or institution could provide medical care, another could provide counselling services while the third could provide legal aid for a rape survivor.
